St.Nicholas and St. Lucia
December 6 and December 13
Saint Nicholas and Santa Lucia are ever-popular Christmastide figures, both
associated with giving and kindness.
On Saint Nicholas Day, it is traditional for a red bag filled with golden
walnuts and clementines to be left in front of the classroom doors of classes
1 - 4. The fifth class assists in filling the shoes of the early childhood
children with clementines and golden walnuts and sometimes Saint Nicholas himself
visits the younger grades.
On Santa Lucia Day, class 2 travels from room to room throughout the school,
singing and delivering baked goods. The girls, dressed in white, take turns
wearing the candle wreath of Santa Lucia and lead the procession. As Santa
Lucia's helpers the boys carry the baskets or trays of baked goods to be shared
with the other classes.
