May Day
May
Day has typically been celebrated on a Saturday early in
May. This is a festival
that spotlights the fourth graders, clad in
white, marking their departure
from the world of little children
and the beginning of their transition to
the upper grades. A
multitude of flowers are woven into garlands and wreathes
to
create an air of festivity.
The event begins with a procession led by musicians. The
procession moves
through the school, picking up classes
room by room, then moves outside and
proceeds to the
maypole ring. Parents and friends stand along the walkway
forming
an arch with flowered branches. A humorous skit follows, in which Lady Spring
and King Winter, played by teachers or parents, vie for supremacy. The fourth
grade is summoned, and carries in the maypole, vanquishing King Winter. With
the arrival of the pole, the dancing begins. The celebration is culminated
by the fourth graders® intricate weaving of colored ribbons around the maypole.
