Halloween, October 31
Although extensive commercialization has diminished its spiritual emphasis,
Halloween, or All Hallows' Eve, is actually the first of the festivals of light.
On this evening, when it is said that the veil between the physical and spiritual
worlds is at its thinnest, and the denizens of the spirit world may walk upon
the earth, it has been traditional to light lanterns to ward off evil.
At the Waldorf School of Cape Cod, we seek to rekindle the light of Halloween
through our in-school celebrations. Early childhood and first grade classes
have a separate celebration from grades 2 - 8. For the younger children, a
series of vignettes staffed by parents and staff are set up in the school yard.
Small groups of children travel from station to station where they meet characters
both realistic and fantastical - lobstermen and bakers, wizards and gnomes.
At each station the children are given a helpful task to perform, and are rewarded
for their kindness with a healthy treat or simple memento.
For students in the other grades, the celebration includes a costume parade,
a special assembly with a story in a darkened room, and a treasure hunt. The
older students help prepare the assembly room and create clues for the treasure
hunt.
