Advent
Advent is the season preceding Christmas during which Christians
await the arrival of the Christ child. It is a time of quiet introspection,
meditative searching, and joyful anticipation. In other traditions as well,
this season of shortening days and lengthening nights is a time for reflecting
on and honoring the past, looking to the future, and searching for inner light
in a period of outer darkness.
In many Waldorf schools, the tradition of the Advent spiral is followed. At
the Waldorf School of Cape Cod, the early childhood classes have continued
this tradition. The school as a whole began, in 1999, a new approach to the
Advent garden. A lighted walkway of vignettes created by the children of the
grades is set up, and is open to visitors on an evening in December. The vignettes
draw on themes from the children's Main Lesson curricula, and highlight the
values of giving, reflection, and searching for light. Families and friends
are invited to sit, walk through the garden, and listen to readings and musical
meditations.
