Early Childhood
Overview
Parent-Child Program
Participants in the Parent-Child program gather to support one another in their work of parenting, to explore the joys and challenges of raising young children, and to learn simple crafts, stories, and songs. Through play and work, the children have their first taste of being with others in a group. These classes strive to nurture not only the child through movement and the adults through conversation, but also to nourish the warm and loving relationship that lives in the space between parent and child. An adult (parent, grandparent, childcare provider) and child attend the class together one morning a week from 9:00-11:00am.
Upon entering the classroom, one finds the children engaged in play with a variety of handmade toys and natural objects. Carved wooden animals and silk cloths, a housekeeping area with simple dolls and dishes, wooden tractors and cars, baskets of pinecones and shells, and blocks made of tree slices set the stage for imaginative play. At a table, the adults are working on a simple handwork project while discussing topics such as rhythm, discipline, imaginative play, and child development. Eventually, toys and projects are put away and the children and parents gather in a circle to sing seasonal songs and rhymes, do finger plays, and listen to a story (often told using table puppets). The parents and children gather to enjoy a snack that they helped prepare earlier, take time for a short rest, and go outdoors to play.
Sessions are offered in the fall, winter, and spring. The registration form contains the specific details about the schedule and costs, so please visit our Forms page to download a registration form. If you have further questions, please contact the school by calling 508-759-7499 or complete our web site Contact Form.
Nursery & Kindergarten
Because young children are so deeply connected to and
imitative of their environment, special care is given to create a play
environment that
is beautiful, unhurried, and secure. We observe a daily, weekly, and seasonal
rhythm in our classrooms. Our intent is to provide a home-like setting that
encourages the unfolding of the imagination through a rich exposure to language,
culture, and the natural world. Our mornings are filled with a variety of stimulating
activities including:
- creative play
- practical activities
- storytelling
- puppetry
- nature walks
- baking
- drawing
- beeswax modeling
- painting
- singing
- movement
- poetry
- exposure to foreign language
